Do you know your Fair Housing Rights?

Do you know your Fair Housing Rights?

April is Fair Housing Month if you haven’t noticed already with many social medias blasting out fair housing awareness.  It’s all about fighting housing discrimination.  Do you know your fair housing rights?

On April 11, 1968 President Johnson signed the landmark for Fair Housing Act into law prohibiting discrimination in the sale or rental of housing based on race, color, sex, religion, national origin, familial status or disability.

If you thought housing discrimination is a thing of the past, we are sadly reminded that it’s still very much a part of society today.  Some recent cases such as a single mother of two hoping to rent a two bedroom apartment only to be told by the landlord that there is a “one heart beat per room rule”.  Or a deaf woman who tried to rent an apartment only to be suggested that people like her “should be in a nursing home”.  These stories are real, listen to them!

Make sure you know your Fair Housing Rights and if you feel you have been a victim of discrimination make sure to reach out and file a complaint.  Here is the HUD link with all needed resources.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion.  People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite”~ Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela
